FOUNDING PRINCIPLES

The principle of education on which these
children’s schools are founded and run was developed by adults
studying practical philosophy at the School
of Economic Science in England, and at like-minded
organisations in other countries.
Many
thousands of people have attended evening classes in philosophy
offered by these organisations around the world. They not
only debate the great philosophic ideas of West and East,
but also learn in practice how to be still, how to give attention,
and how to be effective in their lives.
Underlying this practical philosophy, and informing the
educational principles of these schools, is a message of
unity. It says that behind all the differences in the world
is a single creative force of consciousness. This consciousness
never changes. It is the essence of every human being.
‘Philosophy emerges, then, as one of
the noblest of human tasks. According to its Greek etymology,
the term philosophy means “love of wisdom.” Born and
nurtured when the human being first asked questions about
the reason for things and their purpose, philosophy shows
in different modes and forms that the desire for truth
is part of human nature itself.’
